Zanotta – Quaderna Bench

The Quaderna bench is produced according to a design by the designers from Superstudio. It is part of a series of products in which the designers include checked patterns for numerous furniture pieces, kept strongly geometrical.

The design studio Superstudio was founded in Florence in 1966 and fast became one of the most important protagonists of the “Radical Design”. This radical design approach was part of the protest movement and wanted to completely change the conservative design environment instead of designing products in a specified frame. The pieces of furniture of the Quaderna collection of 1970 are likely the maybe most famous designs of Superstudio.

The Superstudio designers chose straight forms for their Quaderna bench: The bench consists of only three square-angled plywood panels that are covered with white print. This geometric construction is complemented with the checked pattern which covers the entire bench.

The exceptional design gained the Quaderna series the gold medal at the International Fair M.I.A in 1971.

The pieces of furniture nowadays are exhibited in numerous design museums such as the Museum for Applied Arts in Cologne or the Arts Museum in Berlin. The Quaderna collection is produced by the Italian company Zanotta. A wall table and a desk matching the banch are also available.
